With odds of 33-1 at online bookmaker Paddy Power Paddy Power, the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Splash of Ginge shocked many punters on Saturday when the 6 year-old won the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury.

Ginge came home a length and three-quarters ahead of runner-up Dell’ Arca (15-2), followed by favourite Irish Saint (6-1) in third position, and Cheltenian (8-1) in fourth.

Following the win, Ginge became only the fourth novice to win Britain’s richest handicap hurdle in the last four years.

While the win shocked many, Splash of Ginge’s team always knew the horse was in with a chance. Carl Llewellyn, assistant to Twiston-Davies, said: “We did think he had a better chance than his price. He was six lengths behind Irving at Ascot and that was favourite and he would have been better off at the weights so that gave him some hope. He went off in front until Act Of Kalanisi took it off him but he does stay well.”

The win at Newbury on Saturday has catapulted Ginge to a 16-1 chance for the County Hurdle at next month’s Cheltenham Festival over at Paddy Power Paddy Power.

The Cheltenham Festival runs from the 11th – 14th of March. Open a real money account at Paddy Power Paddy Power and place your ante post bets today. Sign up to receive a free £50 bet!
